Two eminent British scientists who pioneered research into childbirth have been named as callous murderers who rank among the worst serial killers in history.

A historian claims to have proof that William Hunter and William Smellie, regarded as the founding fathers of modern obstetrics, solicited the murders of up to 40 heavily pregnant women and their unborn babies so they could dissect their corpses.

The claim, published in a leading medical journal, has shocked today’s obstetricians who regard the two men as giants of medicine whose research paved the way for vast improvements in obstetric care.
