If you missed the first part of this BBC Radio 4 series, it’s worth a quick trip to iPlayer on your laptop. The two-part documentary looks at leadership from every angle and every sector and asks a host of interesting questions, not least the differences between a good leader and a good manager, which aren’t the same at all.

Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden describes herself as a “born entrepreneur”, but is leadership really in your genes or can you learn it?

This new two-part BBC Radio 4 series presented by journalist Carolyn Quinn aims to look under the bonnet of leadership from every angle, including what makes a great leader, whether leadership skills can be learned and the differences between good leaders and good managers. Business, politics and sport are all sectors covered.

The documentary also looks at the academic study of leadership, starting with Plato’s musings in 350 BC, up to modern-day academics who are attempting to distil the ingredients for the perfect leader. Some psychologists think it boils down to having the right personality traits, others that timing is essential.

The wealth of courses, modern leadership gurus and millions of self-help books dedicated to the topic are all examined.

Among others, interviews in the first instalment include Meaden as well as politicians Ming Campbell and Michael Howard, both political leaders who suffered perception problems during their time at the top, not least jibes about their age and looks.

>> You can listen to the first instalment from 4th January on BBC iPlayer here and the final part of the documentary is due to first air on Radio 4 on Tuesday 11th January at 21.00 with a repeat on Wednesday 12th January at 16.30.
