Entries are pouring in for the annual NatWest everywoman awards, which celebrate female entrepreneurs, in particular those who have overcome personal and financial difficulties, to run a successful business. The event, backed by Financial Mail, offers ten awards, including four categorised by age group.

David Cameron says: ‘Women’s enterprise already adds some £70 billion every year to our economy – yet women are still only half as likely to be involved in start-up activity as men. So inspiring more women to set up their own businesses is crucial to our long-term economic recovery, and I would like to thank everywoman for everything it has been doing over the past ten years to support and encourage women in British businesses.’

Francesca Cragg, 23, won the 2009 Artemis award for the most inspiring female entrepreneur aged under 25. She set up Revitalize Hair and Beauty Spa, in Horwich, Lancashire, with her sister Stephanie Carter, 26, in 2007. The salon is the first in Britain to be run using renewable energy.

‘Winning the award was a great honour and an amazing achievement for the start of my career,’ says Francesca.

‘It is a popular stereotype that a hairdresser’s main concern is that of beauty, rather than matters of the brain. Winning the award has helped me prove that the business is just as important.’

Francesca started her career in hairdressing aged 13 and was one of the youngest people to gain the NVQ Levels 1 and 2 in hairdressing.
