Financial Freedom is Financial Mail on Sunday’s newsletter for women leaving prison. The newsletter, written by FMWF staff, draws on our close ties with the Prison Reform Trust and has been supported by the Government Equalities Office, the Nationwide Foundation and Friends Provident.
Providing basic financial advice plus help with housing, claiming benefits and finding a job, the newsletter also benefited from input from the women of Downview prison in Sutton, Surrey, and those at the Birmingham women’s centre, Anawim.
Together with the newsletter we have launched a free 0800 helpline number to help those prison leavers with nowhere to turn. You can read Financial Freedom and other helpful information for disadvantaged women on the ‘Fresh Start‘ section of FMWF.com
Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Equality, said: ‘Women leaving prison need help getting their life back on track. This newspaper and the helpline will make it easier for them to get the support they need finding somewhere to live and managing a budget. Getting the right support is an important part of breaking the cycle of reoffending. The Government is doing a lot to change how we deal with women offenders, including those in prison, helping them on the path to rehabilitation.’

What an absolutely brilliant and inspirational initiative. Hats off to the FMWF team. Great example of corporate social responsibility quietly humming away in the background, doing some awesome things that can make a huge difference to the direction that a person’s life can take.

Congratulations to Linda Buckingham and the FMFW team. A simple idea, but a much needed needed one which would not have gone anywhere without you all to champion it. Well done!
FMWF will now become required reading for all Cascade’s female service users and our staff. We shall be delighted to assist in any way possible with future publications

I think this is a very good start, there is such a need for support when coming out of an institution like prison after so many years.
