Financial Mail’s Breaking the Mould Conference – March 1, 2010

Read about the event here.

Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane

9.00 am – Registration. Tea and coffee and Danish pastries to be served in the Park Lane suites. During this hour delegates will have an opportunity to visit the exhibition stands.

10.00 am -  Welcome by Lisa Buckingham, Editor of Financial Mail

The panels:

There will be two sessions of panel speakers with a break for lunch midway through. At lunchtime delegates will have another opportunity to visit the exhibition stands and enjoy some food provided by the InterContinental Hotel.

1. Apprenticeships panel – Looking at apprenticeship schemes in some big companies such as British Gas and B&Q. As an apprentice you can earn while you learn and gain recognised qualifications. University is not the only option for young people leaving school. There are already over 190 types of apprenticeships and the Government is aiming to bring about significant growth in the number of employers offering them.

2. Secret jobs of a big organisation: NatWest panel – There are many jobs in big organisations which young people may not have thought of, such as sponsorship and events organisation, marketing and social enterprise. We will explore some of these ’secret’ jobs in NatWest.

3. Second thoughts panel – Career changes are becoming more and more common and moving into a new career can be very fulfilling. Young women should not be afraid of ‘getting it wrong’ or ‘choosing the wrong career’. Guests will hear from some women who have found success second time around.

5. Working for charity panel – The charity sector is increasingly becoming a career of choice for young people. We will hear from some inspirational women in the sector who will give a bit of insight as to what is really like.

6. Entrepreneurship – Programmes such as Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice have encouraged a desire in many young people to be entrepreneurs themselves. But it is not just about the big idea. Sara Murray, founder of buddi, will give tips on other things you need to think about to put a great plan into action.

7. The Senses - We will have speakers whose work involves the senses – touch, taste, smell, sound and sight – from optometry to wine tasting.

8. Technology/Telecoms – We hear from top flight speakers from O2 and IBM and introduce you to some innovative women on the web.

9. Sleuthing – Looking at jobs involving the pursuit of knowledge – from archaeology to air accident investigation and uncovering fraud.

MoneySense Apprentice Challenge live final:

We will be having a champagne reception which will kick off at 4.45 pm to watch the live final of our MoneySense Apprentice Challenge which promises to be truly inspirational as four teams of young women entrepreneurs compete in our boardroom with judges made up of stars from the BBC’s Apprentice programme, led by the fearsome Margaret Mountford.

Their challenge has been to design a game to teach personal finance in the classroom and the quality of entries so far is stunning. We are hoping our lavish staging of the final will give the whole event a bit of showbiz glitz to make it memorable for the girls who are competing for prizes totalling £5,000. The finalists will be allowed to bring some family and friends and we hope most of the day’s conference audience will stay too.
