Our Breaking the Mould Apprentice Challenge which offers prizes of £5,000 is off to a flying start after securing the support of the prestigious RBS MoneySense programme.
The Challenge is for girls schools to design and bring to market a game that can be used in the classroom to teach personal finance. The aims of the game dovetail with those of MoneySense which provides financial education plans for schools.
As Robin Bulloch, managing director of branch banking for NatWest and RBS said: ‘Learning real life money skills at an early age is essential to ensure the next generation is financially educated.’
The RBS MoneySense Challenge will offer prizes of £5,000 to successful schools. A live final to take place in the glittering surroundings of the Park Lane Intercontinental Hotel will be judged by stars from the BBC’s hit show The Apprentice including Margaret Mountford, Saira Khan and Tim Campbell.
Games giant, Hasbro – whose portfolio of top selling games includes Monopoly – has agreed to help the teams cost the production of their games which can be board or electronic.
Lisa Buckingham, editor of Financial Mail which organises the Breaking the Mould conference and challenge, said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that RBS MoneySense is involved in this project. The aims of the game fit perfectly with what the bank’s long established and highly regarded financial education programme is trying to achieve.
‘It is also marvellous that a manufacturer of Hasbro’s standing has agreed to help the girls give a realistic financial backdrop to their projects.’
Though the deadline for entries is tight – the teams must submit their plans by the end of January – all schools will be operating on a level playing field and, by limiting the time, the competition will not interfere with precious A and AS level study time.
RBS’s Bulloch added: ‘ We are really pleased to support this competition which encourages enterprise in young people, and empowers them to think for themselves about how they would like to deliver financial education in a really innovative way.
‘ We at RBS are committed to delivering financial education in schools through our MoneySense for Schools programme which has been running for more than 15 years and now has a presence in nearly 60 per cent of secondary schools.
‘We are really looking forward to taking our seat on the judging panel and seeing all the submissions and creative thinking for this year’s competition entries.’
